About
Hi, I’m Jodi
I’m a singing teacher, songwriter, producer, and independent artist based in Sydney.
I hold a Bachelor of Contemporary Performance from the Australian Institute of Music (AIM), along with a current Working With Children Check (WWCC), and have over 9 years of experience teaching children and young adults (ages 4+) the principles of contemporary singing. My work as both a performer and educator is shaped by a combination of academic training and real-world experience. During my tertiary studies, I developed a strong foundation in advanced music theory and vocal technique, alongside years of performing on stage and recording in studio settings. It was during these years that I learned the foundations of jazz improvisation; understanding key centres, tonality and basic guidelines in vocal improvisation, ‘scatting’. My skills in controlling tone, mastering melismas (runs and riffs), creative adaptation, improvising, and harmony, are vital to my musical identity, expression and catalogue.
My Musical Background
My passion for music began at a young age, growing up in a home where music was always present. My Mum was a piano teacher, so Saturday mornings were often accompanied by the sound of scales and classical concertos. I was encouraged to learn the fundamentals of music from an early age, and those skills naturally grew into composing on the piano, learning my favourite soundtracks by ear, songwriting and eventually music production.
During high school I learned the basics of Logic Pro and Garageband, and became obsessed with layering harmonies, editing recordings, and exploring composition in a wide range of genres. That interest continued throughout my tertiary studies and into my work as a songwriter, producer, performer and independent artist.
In 2015, I performed alongside fellow AIM students for an audience of more than 30,000 as part of the One Million Women Climate Change Campaign, sharing the stage with Deni Hines and contributing to the recording of the campaign anthem, You’re the Voice. Since then, I have continued performing at weddings, private functions and public venues, while developing my own music and building a deeper appreciation for the technical and expressive side of vocal performance.
Why I Teach
At the heart of my teaching is a genuine belief that every voice can be developed - this also extends to one’s musical ear. I love helping students discover what they're capable of and build the confidence to use their skills expressively. There is so much talent and passion in our young voices!
There’s nothing quite like that lightbulb moment in a session; when boundaries are broken and the possibilities are unlocked. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch my students achieve their goals and develop their skills.
Ultimately, I want my students to leave each lesson not only singing better, but with a deeper understanding of their voice and a genuine passion for music, performance and creativity.
